Home health aide, nursing assistant, EKG - phlebotomy, and patient care technician are some of the short term program options available to students. To become a home health aide you need to complete a three week program of study. Most of the material being thought to home health aide students consists of learning how to effectively communicate with clients, recognizing client needs and passing on this information to the registered nurse, as well as observing and recording useful data as it pertains to the client.
The nursing assistant course takes six weeks to complete and it is more comprehensive than the home health aide course. The focus here will be on learning how to perform basic care skills and gain knowledge that will enable you to provide care and assistance in various environments such as the hospital, long term care, or assisted living facilities. The Patient Care Technician course is the longest and most comprehensive one, requiring 18 weeks of training. You will gain a broader set of skills and knowledge than a nursing assistant and will be able to gain employment in home health care setting as well as in hospitals and other health care facilities. Once you complete all program requirements you are allowed to take state exams and hold several certifications stating that you are certified as a Patient Care Technician, a Phlebotomist, and a Nursing Assistant.

The Health Science Department at Charlotte Technical Center located in Charlotte, Florida, offers a nursing assistant program that can be completed in 33 days. This day program consists of 165 hours of instruction and it was created to get your career started as soon as possible.
The same program can be completed during evenings over the course of ten weeks, and this option works well for students who want to keep their current day jobs while completing program requirements. No high-school diploma is required for admission into the nurse assistant course but a basic skills test will be administered to assess the math, reading, and language skills of prospective students. It is important to note that students will need to complete a Tuberculosis test and a background check prior to the beginning of the course.
